چکیده

I present a simulation of contrast gain control mechanisms operating among transient M cells in the monkey s retina in order to investigate the spatial consequences of this interaction The simulation stages include a realistic viewing model non linear receptor model linear spatial ltering and a saturating output function Contrast gain control is introduced by pooling recti ed signals from on and o centred units over a signi cant spatial region and then using the resultant to provide gain modulation by divisive inhibition at the ganglion cell site Both feed forward and feedback models are considered Results show that local response linearity is preserved and therefore spatial signal distortion is avoided using this gain control scheme even though cell outputs appear to have a compressive response to contrast when tested with gratings The primary e ect is to reduce the contrast dynamic range across the image as a whole while keeping a high contrast sensitivity M cells therefore communicate useful undistorted information at both high and low contrasts Response maps for P and M cells are compared

The impact of photoreceptor noise on retinal gain controls.

Multiple retinal mechanisms preserve visual sensitivity as the properties of the light inputs change. Rapid gain controls match the effective signaling range of retinal neurons to the local image statistics. Such gain controls trade an increased sensitivity for some aspects of the inputs for a decreased sensitivity to others. Rapid, local gain control comes at another cost: noise in the signal ...

Cellular basis for contrast gain control over the receptive field center of mammalian retinal ganglion cells.

Retinal ganglion cells fire spikes to an appropriate contrast presented over their receptive field center. These center responses undergo dynamic changes in sensitivity depending on the ongoing level of contrast, a process known as "contrast gain control." Extracellular recordings suggested that gain control is driven by a single wide-field mechanism, extending across the center and beyond, tha...

Retinal ganglion cell adaptation to small luminance fluctuations.

To accommodate the wide input range over which the visual system operates within the narrow output range of spiking neurons, the retina adjusts its sensitivity to the mean light level so that retinal ganglion cells can faithfully signal contrast, or relative deviations from the mean luminance. Given the large operating range of the visual system, the majority of work on luminance adaptation has...

Distinct expressions of contrast gain control in parallel synaptic pathways converging on a retinal ganglion cell.

Visual neurons adapt to increases in stimulus contrast by reducing their response sensitivity and decreasing their integration time, a collective process known as 'contrast gain control.' In retinal ganglion cells, gain control arises at two stages: an intrinsic mechanism related to spike generation, and a synaptic mechanism in retinal pathways. Here, we tested whether gain control is expressed...

The early visual system is endowed with adaptive mechanisms that rapidly adjust gain and integration time based on the local luminance (mean intensity) and contrast (standard deviation of intensity relative to the mean). Here we show that these mechanisms are matched to the statistics of the environment. First, we measured the joint distribution of luminance and contrast in patches selected fro...
